New Zealand Composer and multi-instrumentalist Peter Pritchard is a master of many instruments and idioms.
As a composer of solo piano albums, Peter is known primarily for his beautiful
“contemporary classical” style. His album “Studies for the New Zealand Harmonic Piano” made American Billboard’s top 200 album charts in the first month of release.
Peter has been playing piano seriously since the age of 12, although for many years his main performance instrument was the drums. His move back to keyboards allowed him to follow his passion for composing in a range of genres from Classical and Jazz to Progressive Rock and World Music.
He loves to practice, rising at 3-4 am every morning to play while the world is quiet.
“ I pick a piece by one of my idols and really push myself-at the moment I'm focussing on Schumann”
Like many musicians, Pritchard has inhabited parallel universes-music and business. He qualified in his twenties as an accountant and worked in corporate organizations for a number of years before setting up his own Personnel Consultancy in his home city of Wellington. Outside of his passion for music and his family, Pritchard’s other interests include Astronomy, Cosmology and Physics.
Musical Influences; Romantic/Impressionist period composers Debussy, Schumann, Rachmaninoff and Ravel. Also Modernists Gershwin, John Ireland, Philip Glass and Steve Reich; Jazz legends Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and Pat Metheny; Rock mega-groups Jethro Tull and Yes etc etc
Peter has a passion for writing and playing music in many different genres from WORLD music to Electronica. It also allows him to collaborate on projects with other fine musicians
